My New Theme Song

For those of you who were wondering, I have acquired full citizenship as an American. I got my driver's license yesterday!

I should add that I feel pretty mighty driving around my neighborhood, but merging on the highway, not so much. But maybe in a few months . . . blogger meetup this summer?

Maybe you'll be ready for your first trip in the driver's seat to your beloved city! I might be able to afford an Amtrak day trip there and visit some relatives too! (Yeah, we barely got anything done the last time we were there, but if I don't have 4 kids with me and can just hop on and off mass transit, it'll be just as easy to get around as when I was 21 and still lived there and weighed 70 pounds less.)

If a New Yorker-centric location doesn't work for a blogger meetup, I've truly always wanted to see Ohio (no, really), and that's a lot more central. Amtrak must have some stops there...

Not to be disloyal to New York. Ever. But I cannot imagine driving there!

I thought about that afterward. You mean driving while there, not driving to get there, I suppose? I don't think the convenient availability of mass transit is the only, nor main, reason to forgo driving in NYC, even in the slightly less convenient parts like my old neighborhood.

Congratulations!

In the movie Raising Arizona, there's a scene where one character settles in behind the wheel and says, "I loooove to drive." I know a couple of people like that, but to me driving is one of the consequences of the Fall.

Yes, Ex-New Yorker, I meant driving *in* New York City. One of the reasons I was so scared to drive, even in a much less densely populated place without the ethos of driving sprezzatura, was because of what I'd seen a a non-driver in New York. When I first took driving lessons here, I would slow down and look all around when I had the right of way and the cross-street had a stop sign. My teacher would say, "Keep going! They have to stop!" But there was no guarantee in my mind that anyone would actually stop at a stop sign, since it almost never happens in the Bronx.

Anne-Marie, thank you! I agree.

Good luck! Use your seatbelt! Don't use your phone while driving!! Enjoy! I hope U have good music to listen to when U drive!!

If anyone has good music to listen to while she drives, I bet it's Pentimento! Although I'm not sure she would find such a task as driving an appropriate setting for it. :) (If I ever take over at the wheel, I don't think I'd tolerate my husband playing music in the background, but I'd probably never drive if he were there and functional.)

I am not ready to listen to music while I drive yet! Though I have started singing in the car . . .

I once read an interview with the wife of the conductor of the Montreal symphony orchestra, in which she said that there was never any music at their parties because her husband would give his full attention to any music he heard, to the neglect of the guests. I bet he couldn't drive (at least, not safely) with music either.
